First sneak peak at the Propel'r interface

Posted by jamie at 6:01 PM. Jun 24

We thought it was about time we gave a peek at what can be expected from the Propel’r interface.

Propel'r 'Collect' screenshot

Under the ‘Collect’ tab, there are multiple ways of collecting your data. Initially this will be via ‘Quick Collect’ notes and uploads, however we are planning on implementing collection from POP3 accounts, RSS and other standard formats.

A close up of the main Propel'r navigation

The close up shows how we have broken the navigation down into the five key GTD areas, ‘Collect’, ‘Process’, ‘Organize’, ‘Review’ and ‘Do’:

We will keep you updated with any new developments. In the meantime, comments are most welcome.

Will you provide an API for other developers to use? Without an offline desktop client (for the Mac), I won’t use this. An API would enable 3rd party developers to create interfaces (much like PackRat for 37signal’s BackPack).

“collection from POP3 accounts” ... that would be really nice. Being able to email a task to a dedicated gmail account and have it automatically added with any attached files included would be very useful. Or even better, include email as a built-in interface to propel’r. For example, send email (with possible attachments) to “myuser+context@propelr.com” and it gets added and filed appropriately.

I understand that your first priority will be web based users. I would love a “mobile optimized” version for accessing from my blackberry. An actual J2ME app like the GMail app would be even better.

And email input could be secrettext+context@user.propelr.com to keep out the spam.

It would be nice to see something that actually works.

CRuss: Propel’r uses unobtrusive javascript an will have mobile specific stylesheets, an app may be an idea for future development. As for the email suggestion, we are looking at a couple of options, the one you mentioned and another that actually pulls email from a POP3 account.

Bill: Yes it would, there will be a screencast as soon as the app is ready.

Looking good! Do you have a realistic date for beta or full release?

  7. Jamie Hill July 07, 2007 at 1:05 AM

Ryan: We are currently aiming for late September/October

I am curious, with so many competitors such as Vitalist.com, who is already servicing the GTD community, what will set Propel’r apart? Will it be enough to make one leave his/her GTD app and start over with yours? I’ve been checking this site out every week for the past few months until I noticed your comments above. I have to say that I am frustrated by the lack of updates and little to no communication. A teaser , perhaps screenshots would make people a little more willing to wait. I’ll check back in September because I’m curious, but I have my reservations.

Chris: I understand your frustration. The first main difference you will see in Propel’r is a focus on practising GTD in teams as well as individual usage. The second main difference with Propel’r is that it aims to bridge the gap between traditional project management and GTD allowing management of client requests and more.

Could this include a way to track project Time (expense ) an individual spent on the project. FOr collaborative working this seems to be an easy way to then bill clients for the time spent.

Tim: Without giving too much away at this stage. I will say that the full workflow from planning through billing has been at the forefront of our minds from the start so time tracking/billing will be revealed in later releases.

Do you plan to implement some time-tracking functionality? I use SilmTimer.com for time-tracking and Vitalist.com as GTD organizer, but it is very uncomfortable to copy tasks between two tools and I really miss that functionality to be all in one tool.

  13. Jamie Hill August 16, 2007 at 12:16 AM

Serge: You will definitely see time tracking in future releases.

Will business and personal GTD items be filterable or private? With business collaboration, confidentiality is a sensitivity that is a concern

  15. Jamie Hill September 03, 2007 at 6:50 AM

    Merv: Most definitely.
